Its Anzac Day…a day Australians and New Zealanders take very seriously with a public holiday, parades and services to honour those who have fought in wars. I always listen to the dawn service on the ABC radio and I couldn’t do that today, but I did wake just before dawn and did my own thing, filled with emotion as I always am because I played the Last Post as my memorial. It always affects me.
A few years ago, I was walking the Camino with an ANZAC pin on my bag, and someone actually stole it! Who would do that? This year, I will wear it on my coat. I’m proud to be Australian and proud of those in my family who were involved in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. One uncle was a code breaker at Bletchley Park. Another uncle flew Lancaster bombers, another was shot in the back as he was trying to escape the train on the way to a death camp, another was a prisoner in Changi. My mother was in London during the blitz.
That whole generation was affected in so many ways. It affected my generation differently, as post war freedom became such an enormous thing. Abundance of different foods and new culture came with immigration as we were fed the line of ‘populate or perish’ and our lives were enriched by inventions.
The world has opened up, and as a result, I am able to live here in Spain. I am proud of my heritage and proud of my country, so very grateful and thoughtful today.
Nicely said, Margaret. My father was a navigator on a Lancaster bomber. They might have been in the same squadron (467).
