Up early, out for breakfast and then off to the bus station to move onward and upward to Merida. This took about 2.5 hours and then after finding our rather colourful accommodation, (my room is. Bright purple), we hit the streets to look at more roman ruins.

We were distracted for some time as we found a beautiful restaurant that the receptionist had told us about, and we dined like queens on pulpo, steak and salad. It was delicious and such a treat.
We wandered the streets and found our way to the Teatro, which from memory, was spectacular. However, they have now fenced it off with screening, put in metal walkways and there was heaps of scaffolding and renovations going on. You almost have to sell your body or your children to afford to go in now too! Hitler at the desk was not letting anyone through that wasn’t an EU citizen and wanting pension discounts, even if we had come all the way from Australia.
I don’t mind paying for things like this as I appreciate that it goes towards preservation of the sites, but we are on a budget and when they told us that only EU citizens get age discount, it annoyed us. We didn’t go in
Disappointed is not the only word I could use. I will put some photos here of my last visit to show what was missed today. We ended up hopping on a tourist train that took us around town as I was sorry for my guests who didn’t get to see what we came here for. At least they saw some of the town and got some photos. We are tired anyway, so it’s nice to just come back to our accommodation and rest a bit before moving on to Portugal tomorrow.
Jose will pick us up at 9.30 and drive us to Lisbon. Watch this space for more.

How disappointing!! I felt a bit the same in London where they were charging too much to go into the Cathedral. I was annoyed on two levels . Firstly because it was a place of worship.. and secondly it was ridiculously expensive!! Tourists are nt necessarily rich!
