I missed writing about a day because of bad internet connection.
Stayed in a monastery Albergue in Roncesvalles. We were all in cubicles and the men and women were separate. Went to the 6 o’clock mass and blessing of the pilgrims and had yummy dinner of soup, fish,, pasta and bread with rice pudding.
Left early and then headed for Zubiri. It was a hard day of climbing and descending some more very high hills. The downward slopes are so hard on the calves and at the end of the day, my feet and body ache so much, but how exhilarating! It is so much fun to get up early before the sun comes out and walk. Walked through beautiful forests on the way to Zubiri. Some of the path is washed away and there are some scarily narrow paths with a steep drop. I have been really careful on the rocky bits and the descents (some of which are REALLY steep) so I don’t get a knee or ankle injury and have to give up.
Got to Zubiri and Colleen and I got the last two beds in town! Stayed at a fabulous new Albergue run by two young Russian guys who just couldn’t do enough for us. Such luxuries like shampoo and soap in the showers, they washed and dried all our clothes, cooked a huge pot of spaghetti for dinner, put out fluffy towels for us to use and even gave out free beer on arrival! Fantastic night sleep and even though I was in with 4 other men, there was no snoring. I was really lucky.
Sounds wonderful marg. U most be out of range now- back to old fashioned pen and paper. Keep savouring every minute. Jane x
